Nobody likes me. I don’t have friends. I am going to kill myself. These are just a few statements FPS teachers, counselors, and social workers hear daily. Yes, the District has provided staff training to handle these statements and we do immediately respond with support for any child making self-harm statements.
In the last 2 weeks, there have been multiple suicide attempts by students in the Fulton School District. Since the beginning of school, there have been many hospitalizations due to kids having thoughts of suicide. Fortunately, current Social Workers and Counselors are proactively providing student support when self-harm is mentioned. This mental health support is provided by you, our community, as a result of passing the August 2018 Operating Tax Levy increase. In fact, the District is now seeking to expand the Social Work staff after the Winter Break.
However, support from the school alone is not enough. The video below is the first of many informational segments provided so you can learn the warning signs, learn appropriate responses, and help your child cope with everyday challenges and life. Your FPS faculty and staff are extremely concerned about suicide and OUR kids.
Even though some may think this is normal because of the national trend, Fulton Public Schools does NOT want this to be our normal.
